Default My Jaguar Won't Start!!!!!!

Hi everyone. I've got a 2004 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 with about 51,000 miles. Lately its been having trouble starting till today when it finally decided not to start anymore. When you put the key in the ignition and turn in over it makes a clicking sound, but immediately after you let go of the key it makes this strong static sound. The static sound sounds just about like a tv on a bad channel. Do you guys have any idea as to what might be the problem and how I can fix it? Before today it would occasionally have this problem every couple of days or so (It's been occuring for the past week or week in a half.) When it first started you could just wait a few minutes and the car would start up after trying it the first time, but now there's nothing and I'm pretty screwed. I'm guessing it might be something electrical, but I have no idea. Any help or advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

have you had the battery tested? Or checked the battery terminals?

How mechanically-minded are you? Wanna try?

my guess is that the static sound you hear is a buzzer that's not fully 'buzzing'... i'm not positive. But the rest of that sounds like classic dead battery, or serious corrosion on the battery terminals.

I also forgot to say that the check engine light came on. There was like a red light, then its now amber. (Weird parallelogram looking thing.) As far as the battery goes that's not a bad idea. I will go ahead and check that since its usually the cheapest and most common solution, but I do have a question for you. Do you really think it could be the battery when you put the key in the ignition and the lights and keyless entry still work?

I just looked at the battery and one of the terminals looks fine but the other is pretty corroded. So I'm going to clean that with some baking soda and water along with scrubbing it with an old toothebrush, and I try to start it again and we shall see what happens.

Be sure to remove the terminal and clean both the post and connector...and While your at it..If you have the factory battery, check the electrolyte level too..use distilled water only and top it off above the plates..,not to the top of the fill holes though

Well after I cleaned it the car still wouldn't start and continued to make the same noises. Any other ideas?

It almost points to a bad battery then..if you can get a jump, run it over to Autozone to be sure, they check your battery for free...Mine died about 3 years from new..I replaced it with a Bosch Battery (exact fit and more power capacity) from Pepboys.

and right now, when it's starting to get colder, it's the most common time for batteries to fail.

Sorry to be asking the same question again, but do you guys think it could still be the battery even though the lights still come on in the car and the keyless entry still works?

I will go ahead and take it up to autozone and get the to test it for free. I just realized how when I had my truck before it wouldn't start but it would still turn the lights on, and it had a battery problem. So I'm sure you guys are right. Thanks again you guys.

just to reassure you;
Yes, it is perfectly normal for a battery to continue to run lights and etc, but not have enough life in it to turn the starter motor.

I had the battery tested and it was bad. As far as changing it out goes, do you have do anything special like take it to the dealer or can I just do this at home? (I know some cars require you to take them to the dealer unless you have a special device that will keep the computer powered up while you change it out.)

Afew things will have to be reset:

1. Reset the radio (you need the four digit code to unlock the radio) It was issued on a green credit card sized card..or dealer can get it for you using the VIN...be prepared to go in person to get it.

2. Windows need to be recycled a couple of times to get the auto up and down to work right again

3. Reset the clock

As soon as I saw the title of your thread, and then I read "clicking" in your post, I knew it was the battery

Glad you got it taken care of.

Will the X Type start if left with a dead battery or have no battery for a long period of time? Just curious if the transponder in the key needs to be reprogrammed or if it will stay active until a new battery is replaced?
Thanks!
