Default How common is the P1367 fault code (XJR 1998)?

I bought earlier a 1998 XJR only for parts donor to my front damaged 2000 XJR, but now as the newer car's repairing has ended - and I slowly forgot the lot of work with it -, I got the thought, I "have to" rebuild the donor too. But firstly I wanna check that the engine and the transmission is good. Every other used parts is not too expensive, so these two can forcing me to rebuild or not.

Firstly I solved the gear box problem (fixed 4th), that was caused by low oil level, and the gear lever arm's 2-3-4th selector needle jumped out from the switch in control system.

The next problem is the 'restricted performance', and the code is P1367. I checked the coils (all is OK), but as this fault code means there aren't sparks at the 1A,2B,3B,4A cylinders. I checked it by my eyes, there are not sparks. All of the two ignition coil module gets 5V, and the wiring is not opened between the coils and the modules. Actually I did not checked the wires between the ignition control module, and the pcm (ecm), but how common is this problem? May I buy a new or used ignition control module, or is there a chance for something other that causes this problem?

Hey Steve:
Your question seems to be "how common is this fault code?" I would guess that its pretty rare. Do you really mean, "How do I diagnose the problem?"- You might try swapping the ignition amp modules, reset the codes, and see if the code for the other cylinders comes up.

Hi Steve
Here are 2 JPEG files showing the Engine Compartment Relays fuse box near the ABS Pump and the other Relays in the Engine ECM & TCM box on passenger side:

The relay (R3) Ignition Coil is probably the relay you might want to switch another relay with it to determine if the relay in position R3 is good or not.

Excuse me for seeming a little pig-headed, but the ignition amplifier #1 is common to the cylinders listed, not the relay , and not anything else except the interconnect wiring.

Hi Ross
Update - I just found another member's thread on the forum that rules out the ignition coil relay failure since the relay relates to both banks and this is not the case here.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ot-start-5414/

I noticed that one of the possible P1637 DTC fault causes could be ignition coil relay failure - see JPEG of DTC Summary entry for P1637.

That is why I offered the sugguestion.

Yep, you are right, thats what it says!. I suppose they left out the differentiator that if you get the fault for one bank without the other, it probably is not the relay.

Thank you sirs! Yes, actually the "how common is this fault code?" would have to be the title. Sorry, for my english.

I swapped the ignition coils but not the modules.
Thanks for the idea. (Strange, that sometimes this simple answers misses, to step forward in finding the cause of a problem. )

Well, I swapped the two ignition amp modules, and now I got P1368, and the other four cylinder misfire code. So the problem is solved, I need a new (used) ign.amp module.

Thanks you again for your help!

Steve
Looks like there are a number of used ignition control modules on the various Ebay websites for prices in Europe at the 30 pounds or so range (with shipping) - in the $40 range in USA.

You know the part number, but for other forum members may not know it, the part# is LJA1450AF.
A new one from Jaguar would be in the $400 price range.

Here is a photo of the 2 ignition control modules from Ebay listing showing their location on what looks like a molded piece near the brake fluid reservior. They are not at that location in our 2001 XJ8 and I could not find them.

Hi
Looks like I found the answer why I could not find the Ignition Control Modules in our 2001 XJ8.

From 1999 XJ8 (X308 models) the Ignition Control Module (Ampilfiler Module) is incorporate into each one of the On-Plug Coils (Ignition Coils).

Here is the information from the 1999 XJ model section of the JTIS shop manual:

Appears that the on-plug coil unit has own amplifier module built into it.

Yep, Jim. here are many more differences in the AJ 26 and AJ 27 engines than are normally acknowledged on the forum.
