Default XK Changes from year to year, and some notes on colors

This is a work is process:
For the past couple of months I've been shopping for a used XK. When I started I could sum up my knowledge of Jaguars in one sentence: Nice Looking Car.

I soon learned that there was a major body change in 2007 and I have since focused on vehicles in the newer body style, especially the 2007 to 2009 range.

In shopping for a car it is important to know what changes were made year to year and also which options were available. This information is not that easy to come by. As far as year to year changes, there are lots of web sites with information, but they are not always accurate. As far as looking at a particular vehicle and determining which options were purchased, this is surprisingly difficult in the Jag world. I've been amazed that, in most cases, the list of "options" is actually a list of standard features. This is true even with Jag dealers. It is especially strange because there are so few options on these cars. Yet when I ask about options I get answers like automatic transmission or navigation system.

So, what I decided to do is create a list, year by year, of the changes made to the car and the options that were available.

No doubt the lists I will present below is incomplete and may be inaccurate. That's why I'm hoping some of you will take a look and let me know what to amend. An accurate listing should be helpful to anyone shopping for XK's. (I know there are some minor differences in the options lists between XK’s and XKR’s but for simplicity at this point I am just presenting the XK here.)

I've also included some information on the colors available.

Perhaps all this information is available elsewhere and I'm just reinventing the wheel, if so, please point me in the right direction. Thanks

2007 - first year of the new body style, has a pop-up antenna
2007 Options - luxury package (upgraded leather, heated steering wheel, 19" Cerelia wheels), Aluminum luxury package (similar but with 20" Senta wheels and aluminum veneer accents), Technology package (adaptive cruise control and active headlights), Audio package (525 watt stero with 8 speakers replaces 160 watt 6 speaker standard, with or without Sirius). There were also wheel options (if you did not get a luxury package) including the 19" Cerelia's for $1200, 19" Sabre's in aluminum or chrome, and the 20" Senta's for $5000. Either dark or light wood is available (dark is much more popular). Many 2007 are distinguished by a long and narrow piece of trim on the nose, on either side of the Jaguar logo.

2008 - elimination of the pop-up antenna, the premium sound package now always includes Sirius

2009 - The 09 model gets an increase in the base price, but the standard equipment now includes the 19" Cerelia wheels and the 525 watt stereo. New options include run-flat tires (on 19" Sabre rims) and the Bowers & Wilkins Premium Signature Speaker System. Power-fold mirrors are standard. The partial wood steering wheel is eliminated. The light wood option is eliminated, the choice now is between satin or burl walnut. Slight front restyling, squared off light surrounds on the front bumper

2010 - the 4.2 liter V8 is replaced with a 5.0-liter V8, a rotary gear selection knob, which rises out of the center console upon ignition is added, as is an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential and Jaguar Drive Control (lets the driver choose between three different modes to alter the car's throttle response, shift speed and suspension settings). Air scoops are added to the front sides below the headlights, giving a more aggressive appearance.

Colors:

In shopping for a car, the choice of colors is very important. When looking it helps to know which colors are readily available and which are scarce. The other day I went to Cars.com and looked at the XK convertibles for 2007 and 2008. There were 206 of them. I then looked at the colors and found the following:

  • black 58 28%
  • silver 30 15%
  • indigo 22 11%
  • grey 21 10%
  • red 19 9%
  • green 17 8%
  • white 14 7%
  • light blue 8 4%
  • dark red 7 3%
  • gold 5 2%
  • seafrost 3 1%
  • beige 2 1%

total 206

So, based on the above, if someone says half the cars are black, white or silver, they are correct.

notes: obviously the cars for sale changes daily and so will the percentages, but this probably gives a reasonable ballpark of what is available. Some colors are grouped together, so green will include British Racing Green, Botanical Green or Emerald Fire Green and even Seafrost. I letf similar colors as they were but pulled Seafrost out of the green list. I also separated the light blues (Frost and Zircon) from the dark blue (Indigo).

No doubt there are some errors and misclassifications in the listings. Some of these I no doubt missed. Others I found and corrected - so I looked at the cars listed as Pink or Purple and found they were actually Radiance Red, which I reclassified as dark red here (but note that if you have your heart set on owning a purple XK you can check out the 2012's and look at the color Caviar)

If this helps, my 2008 came with the Power-fold mirrors standard. Also, the partial wood steering wheel was already gone in my 2008 XK.

I'm not sure what Jaguar Drive Control is. I suppose if mine has it and I didn't know, I'll feel a bit sheepish. What I do have is "Normal" and "Sport" on the transmission, and the performance mode on or off for both of those. Outside of that, I'm not aware of any other settings. Did I miss something?

Another question to ask is this: For 2010, it has the active exhaust as standard. For the 12s, it looks like its an option if you build your own on the website. Was it standard or an option for the 11s?

I thought it was just the pop up tranny knob with normal and sport position that came out first on the XF and XJ.

Thanks for doing this. The array of options or models is rather confusing (beyond base, supercharged and R) so this is helpful. I still don't quite undertstand what a "premium" is or some of the other packages.

I also find it hard to find (but useful to have) the original MSRPs for the car and options, so as to give me a handle on depreciation.

I think the switchover in body styles, and from 4.2L to 5.0L engines are probably the most significant.

I would like to see a picture of what you mean by this. My XKR was first sold 31 July 2008 and was listed as a 2008 model when I bought it used and I suspect it has some "2009 MY" features. Jaguar, like many foreign manufacturers, does not always stick rigidly to the US model year BS. This is how we often hear of 2008.5 models of certain cars. Sometimes there are CAFE regulatory issues that cause an importer to declare cars for one year rather than another, regardless of build standard.

AgentOrange, you make a good point that sometimes changes occur within a model year and not just when the new model year begins. The front piece I was referring to is pictured here, although looking into this more carefully it seems only some of the 09's had this, such as the Portfolio's and XKR's.

Interesting. Here is a link to the photos I posted of my "2008" XKR.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ictures-64028/

Those foglamp fittings look radically similar to me.

Then there is this 2007 XKR.

Default Xkr

I believe you're referring to the foglights correct? That is the standard 07-09 XKR foglight surround. Not available on the XK. Maybe an XK owner in an ad you saw had a front end accident and replced the XK bumper with an XKR bumper.

PS Those chrome rims look awesome on the dark gray XKR Agent Orange

The best researched guide available is JAGUAR All The Cars by Nigel Thorley currently in the fourth edition.

It's not just a limited slip, it's an 'active' differential.
