I need to remove the rear view mirror because it won't stay in position any longer. Mine has both compass and rain sensor with a rather large plastic cover of some sort against the windshield. Apparently, all or some of this stuff has to come off to replace the mirror. The local Jag dealer wants big dollars just to tell me how it works(not to do anything), says it takes "special tools" that I can't get. I don't believe this, nor do I think brain surgery is involved, but I don't want to break the windshield either. Also, the dealer wants some $600 for a new one. Is there an after market source for a reasonable price? Hope someone can help.

Unfortunately, it seems that every model has its own peculiar way of configuring rear view mirrors (probably most other things as well). I finally got it off using brute strength, by pulling the plastic shroud containing the mounting hardware and electronics - out and down - parallel to the windshield.

Now that I have it in hand, I'm not any better off because the electronics inside the mirror are connected to a small circuit board via a 10 pin connector with 8 black wires and a second cable not attached to the circuit board, containing 3 wires - gray, black, and white which are connected to who knows what at the other end. So, that leaves me with only the option of paying Jaguar's exorbitant price or gambling on a salvage unit.

 

my mirror just fell out of the mount. Is this what happened to yours? and what did you have to do to put it back in?

 

What type of adhesive do you use to replace the mount?

 

My Jag-specialist indie wouldn't touch it either, but told me to check Speedy Glass. They are used to mirror replacement when removing/fitting windscreens.

Speedy had my old mirror out and new mirror in after a few minutes. Cost "no charge, just remember us when it's time to replace your windscreen".

Before you replace the mirror, check the model name at the back. If it's Gentex you are OK, but if it's Donnelly, see this thread:

Ok, I would like to update my progress because I found that there is not a lot of information on the rear view falling off with solutions.

Some information suggested to change the entire glass... no way!

I have a 2003 S-type 3.0 liter.

Mirror description:
The mirror has the circle metal base with the sensor in the middle of the base. I have the mirror with the off & auto buttons on the front of the mirror.

1. I found it easier to remove the mirror by carefully taking the front plastic covering (that covers the wiring) off first. 2. Then on the wider section of the back cover, carefully spread it open to move it out the slots and it would come off. 3. To remove the mirror from the base ring, use a small flat head screw driver to spread the two metal tabs (one at a time), as you slide it out of the slots.

My mirror fell off and they was still the original adhesive on the Windshield. I tried using the adhesive from the auto parts store but it did not hold when it tried to put the mirror back on.
I read about this Permabond f246 adhesive but no one had it so I said forget it. Another member mentioned super glue and I finally said what the hell. I applied it to the metal base and held it in place on the raised original adhesive still on the glass and it worked perfectly.

Hope this helps anyone else with this problem.

 

The MAJOR reason it did not work was not removing the old glue and really getting the glass super clean. I use a razor blade and then wipe the glass with Acetone to remove all the residue.

The original adhesive is raised and the mounting ring does not fit flat on the glass as other mirrors. If you remove that, then you would really be in trouble. The normal glass adhesives wouldn't work because mounting ring is not flat on the glass. The old glue is hard and shaped for the ring.

 

My husband couldn't find a lot of info on how to remove and replace the rearview mirror on my 2002 S-type so he made this video on how to do it when he figured it out. Hope it helps someone looking in this thread!

 

For those of you who couldn't tell how to take of the rear-view mirror.

I work at a windshield replacement shop.
A customer came in with a 2002 Jaguar S-Type from a online referral service. We had hell of a time poking the mirror (no force, just playful push/shove). After a search on this forum, I found this video, but it was to dark and seemed dangerous for us to just bang a customers mirror off.
So I managed to get the rear-view mirror off by holding from BOTH sides of the mirror triangular cover (this cover does not come off separate from the glass it is indeed a 1 piece assembly, be careful), above the mirror (on the headliner side) One hand of both sides and pulled down PARALLEL to the WINDSHIELD towards the engine. That did just the trick. I will upload a few pictures in case it can help anyone.
Now I am having trouble removing the dang windshield defroster.
