Do not believe it has a belt. We don't see the diesel here in the States, so I'll defer, but to my recollection, Jaguar does not use timing belts in anything.

The X-type (petrol) does not use a timing belt, it uses chains. That said, there was no X-type in "93". Maybe you meant "03"?

That's my feeling too Steve, Oldtimer if you head over to the X section you will geyt the answer, on the S type you can see the cam chain through the oil filler hole.

I'm sure of all models/years in NA back to the SII because I've worked on just about every one. It's the diesel part, which we techs just don't see in NA. In fact, I don't even have any technical info or data on it. As Jagtec says though no such animal as a 93 X-Type, but I'm betting it's an 03 X-Type with a "slip of the typing finger" by one key.

The X-Type diesels are made by Ford. I don't think they have a cam belt, but to allay all doubt, get hold of the servicing schedules, because cam belts normally need to be replaced at a fixed time interval of about 5-6 years, OR at a mileage, usually between 60-90k, manufacturers vary in their recommendations.

Also have a close look at your car's engine. A Cambelt is usually covered with a pressed steel cover; a camchain will be buried in the front of the engine as it runs in oil.

I'll check tomorrow. The S type diesel uses a belt, (change at 105000 miles or 10 years, Jaguar figures) AND small chains which are internal and maintenance free.

Yes, cambelt change needs a mileage figure. The previous owner may have changed it, so you need to get hold of him/her and find out. No sense in spending money without justification. Modern cambelts can be rated to 150,000mile, it all depends what's been fitted to yours. You are of course aware of the damage a snapped cambelt can cause? It will write off the cyl. head -- VERY painful in the wallet. It happened to me. After a while, I realized the car (Audi) was an economic write-off.
In case anyone is wondering, I can state that the belt used in the 2.7D for instance is colossal, about twice the width you'd expect.
