I got my '89 XJS today (love it!), however the battery was dead and needed to be charged. As such, the radio has reset and won't work. It just says "code" on the screen when you turn it on. I assume this is an anti-theft feature and I need to enter a code to unlock it, but how do I know what the code is and how to enter it?

 

The radio code is a numerical five digit code and it is shown on a small book that is part of the original purchase with the car. The small book is glove compartment size and contains owner information for the car like tire size, fuel requirements, jacking and towing and other stuff like that. Maybe Jaguar might have the code if you gave them the vehicle identification number. I had the little book when i bought my 87 Jaguar XJ6. My 88 XJS had a upgraded CD player and I don't need the code. Try Jaguar....just a suggestion.

 

Well, I finally got around to calling Jaguar today, and unfortunately my XJS is old enough that I need the serial number off the BACK of the radio. So I have to take it out to get it. I'm wondering id I should maybe just put in a new cd player instead, since I'm going to have to open up the dash anyway, but I'd like to keep everything original. Dangit!

The "problem" I have with putting in a new radio in your XJS is that all the new radios have all those ridiculous LED lights and graphics and it looks like a Las Vegas billboard -- totally wrong in a classic like an XJS.

However, while you have it pulled out, you might consider installing the XM/Serius converter back there and going XM in your Jag. Thats what I did.

Strange that you say 5 digit code. My '92 takes a 4 digit one.....

On every Jaguar I've had, the security code has been automatically accepted after entering the last digit on the numeric keypad. Are you sure you have the right code for your vehicle

Need some help!
My radio plays well and accepts the code But each time I restart the car, the radio asks for the code. I checked the Ground, and the white and red line, the white and blue line, and the purple line. All appear in good order. The rest of the lines (eight) are for the four speakers and should not effect the code. The radio was removed from the car and was without power. It plays fine now, but it needs the code each time it is turned on.

 

Sounds like it isn't getting a constant live feed. Have you checked that one of the wires is live all the time ?

 

The 89 XJS has a inline fuse under the console "ski slope". If you are really lucky, you can sometimes take the right side vert cover off the side of the console, and get to this fuse. Since the radio works, you are losing power to the radio relay. It is what allows the power anteena to get its feed (I think), or vice versa. Either way, you are losing power when you turn the ignition off, causing the radio security to detect it being disconnected from the battery. Replace that fuse, or the one under the left side, in the fuse panel, and problem will most likely be resolved.

 

Thanks for your comments, There are two "power in" lines. Purple, and white with blue trace. Both are hot. Did a simulation on the bench with 12vt power supply. Simulated current off on one line then the other and still could not maintain the code.
No person is going to steal a 20 year old radio with a cassette. So I don't need the code safety feature. Has anybody disabled the code or removed the code circuit? A schematic or a model number and manufacturer would be helpful.

 

In my desire to restore a factory radio to my '90 XJS I was lucky to find a very generous fellow member who gave me the radio out of his '90.

I have his VIN number and the radio serial number but neither the Jaguar dealer nor one of the companies online who sell the codes was able to find a code for this.

After reading through the forum I have tried many "universal" codes such as;

44325
24255
44532

None of those worked.

I'm afraid that I may not be able to get this radio to work. If no one has another solution I guess I will have to look for another radio that comes with a code known to work.

If anyone has a nice AJ8700 radio with a code please contact me.

I dont know if the AJ8700 radio has any jumpers like that but maybe I will take off the cover and have a look.

 

What is the correlation between the jumpers and the code? I'm not seeing the pattern. Mine has jumpers at the 2,3 and 6 positions.

I have a radio I got from a junkyard, no idea of the VIN of the original car and the online code finders either require the VIN or the radio is too old. It's an AJ9150W.

When I bought the car it had a nasty aftermarket radio that looks like a video game, I want to back to a factory radio.

 

I never got around to pulling the cover off if my radio but I was able to buy a code from "jerryjag" on eBay;

I sent him my radio serial number and he provided not only the code but also a printed book and code cards just as was originally provided by Jaguar. I think its a great deal for $35.00.

The code for my radio is 44522. Give it a try and see if it will work on yours.
